Menjadi imam harus memenuhi beberapa syarat agara sholat berjamaah dapat berjalan dengan sempurna. Sudah mashur jika menjadi imam sholat berjamaah diutamakan seorang laki-laki muslim. Jika imam seorang perempuan dan yang menjadi makmum adalan laki-laki maka tidak sah sholat berjamaahnya. Imam berarti seorang yang memegang kepemimpinan atau kekuasaan, dal hal sholat berjamaah berarti imam adalah pemimpin dalam sholat. Adapula sebagian ulama memaknai imam sebagai orang yang sholatnya diikuti orang lain dengan syarat yang telah ditentukan dalam syariat. Langsung saja, berikut syarat menjadi imam menurut Imam Syafi’i dan juga syarat menjadi imam sholat berjamaah Syarat Menjadi Imam Sholat Berjamaah Imam Syafi’i Wajib beragama Islam Pertama hal yang harus dipenuhi untuk menjadi imam yakni harus beragama Islam. Imam Syafi’I melalui kitab al-Mughni al-Muhtaaj jilid I hal 241 menjelaskan, ”Jika diketahui dengan jelas bahwa seorang Imam itu kafir atau dari jenis perempuan, maka wajib untuk mengulang sholatnya.” Imam harus berakal Sehat Sebagai seorang imam wajib memiliki akal yang sehat. Jika tidak maka sholatnya tidak sah karena dipimpin oleh orang gila, mabok, linglung. Imam Harus Baligh Selanjutnya imam sholat harus sudah balig, maksudnya imam harus sudah dewasa dan tidak sah bila imam masih kecil belum dewasa. Diutamakan laki-laki Diutamakan imam sholat berjamaah adalah laki-laki sedangkan untuk sholat berjamaah yang jamaahnya perempuan, imam diperbolehkan seorang perempuan juga dengan syarat tidak ada laki-laki. Suci dari Hadast dan Najis Imam sholat berjamaah harus suci dari hadas dan najis baik besar maupun kecil karena jika tidak maka sholat berjamaahnya tidak sah. Fasih dan Mempunyai keilmuan tentang Rukun Sholat Imam diutamakan fasih dalam membaca Al-Quran, karena itu menjadi syarat sah sholat. Selain itu imam sholat juga harus menerapkan rukun-rukun sholat serta paham. Sebagaimana hadis yang disampikan oleh Abi Mas`ud Al Badri Radhiyallahu anhu, yang juga menjadi syarat yang nomor 7,8,9 dan 10 dari Rasulullah Shallallahu alaihi wa sallam bersabda يَؤُمُّ اْلقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوْا فِى الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءٌ فَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالسُّنَّةِ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوْا فِى السُّنَّةِ سَوَاءٌ فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً ، فَإِنْ كَانُوْا فِى اْلهِجْرَةِ سَوِاءٌ فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ سِلْمًا وَفِى رِوَايَةٍ سِنًّا، وَ لاََ يَؤُمَّنَّ الرَّجُلُ الرَّجُلَ فِي سُلْطَانِه وفى رواية فِي بَيْتِهِ وَ لاَ يَقْعُدْ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ Artinya “Yang berhak menjadi imam suatu kaum, ialah yang paling pandai membaca Kitabullah. Jika mereka dalam bacaan sama, maka yang lebih mengetahui tentang sunnah. Jika mereka dalam sunnah sama, maka yang lebih dahulu hijrah. Jika mereka dalam hijrah sama, maka yang lebih dahulu masuk Islam dalam riwayat lain umur. Dan janganlah seseorang menjadi imam terhadap yang lain di tempat kekuasaannya dalam riwayat lain di rumahnya.
